BIM Required in Wisconsin for State Projects

Effective July 1st, 2009 the Wisconsin Department of Administration Division of State Facilities is now requiring Building Information Modeling (BIM) be used on larger state projects.

BIM is required on the following:

  • all construction (new and addition/alteration) with total project funding of $5M or greater
  • all addition/alteration construction with total project funding of $2.5M or greater that includes new addition costs of 50% or more of total

BIM is encouraged but not required on all other projects.

More information on BIM requirements in Wisconsin can be found at the following site:

This requirement will dramatically change how many design firms working in Wisconsin will operate.  It will be interesting to see how many other states follow suit in the next few years.
