In Revit 2012 you can also just go to the Materials dialog and go to the Identity tab. When you’re on that tab a little purge icon turns up in the bottom left where you create/copy/delete materials. Doing it this way you don’t have to use the sometimes slow project-wide Purge function

Rob is correct. In-Place Mass families are created in the project file and do have the ability to have Reference Lines similar to other families.

This is incorrect. Reference lines can be created in an In-Place Mass in the project environment.

There is no information on their website concerning price, so interested persons would need to contact Codebook directly to get pricing. From talking with them at Autodesk University 2012, it is not inexpensive, but can be worth it for large projects.
